Firelei Báez: An Open Horizon (or) the Stillness of a Wound

Documentary, Short 8m 2021

Exquisitely detailed and vibrantly colored, internationally acclaimed artist Firelei Báez’s paintings of dramatically shapeshifting figures assert the power of the female form and challenge fundamental ideas around beauty and agency. Working in her Bronx studio, Firelei creates a series of paintings that draw upon the rich yet misapprehended folklore and colonial history of the Caribbean, where she was born and raised. Produced by the Peabody Award-winning non-profit Art21 and shot on 16mm film, this documentary short is a densely textured portrait of an artist in a state of constant motion and creative transformation, following Firelei as she paces her studio and travels through her Bronx neighborhood.
